Roger O'Toole

Physiotherapist - Persistent Post Concussion Symptoms

Since graduating with first class honours as a physiotherapist in 2002 Roger O’Toole developed an interest in chronic conditions, completing post graduate training in advanced physiology and chronic pain management. Since 2004, Roger has focused his interest in chronic conditions into headache and migraine treatment. In 2012 the Melbourne Headache Centre was born, treating people with a range of disorders with overlapping symptoms including headache, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, vertigo and visual disturbances, sensitivity to light (photophobia) and sound (phonophobia), sleep disturbance, low mood, anxiety and lethargy.

Having consulted for over 6000 hours with over 1500 clients, Roger is one of the most experienced practitioners in Australia in using the Watson Headache® Approach, which is designed specifically for treating sensitivity rather than the simplified ‘stretch and strengthen’ approach.

This interest has now evolved and blended into another of Roger’s passions – sport, with his involvement both clinically, and as a clinical researcher in concussion management. Anyone suffering persistent symptoms (< 1 month) after suffering a concussion or whiplash, that not only identify with any of the the symptoms above (headache, dizziness etc), but have a lower threshold for aggravating symptoms (i.e. walking, lifting, bending, looking at screens, ‘busy’ visual or noisy environments), may have more of a sensitivity and ‘stressed brain’ problem than a mechanical one, and may benefit with using techniques specifically designed for the job.

Though the neck is often painful after a concussion, the persistent symptoms post concussion mimic those of migraine more so than neck pain, and respond far better to techniques dealing with the sensitivity of the nervous system, rather than the more traditional ‘stretch and strengthen’ approach, which for most sufferers reaching the ‘persistent stage’ they have already tried and failed.
